The Neil Young Spotify Saga is Another Example of Corporations Failing America
Neil Young requested to have his music removed from Spotify due to Spotify platforming Joe Rogan’s vaccine misinformation. Now that the request is granted, we wonder why Spotify allows this misinformation to continue thriving on their platform. For many, there isn’t a wonder however. It’s quite clear that podcasting and Joe Rogan in particular brings Spotify a massive amount of their wealth.
What we know about mega multinational corporations is that they will prioritize their profit over all else. They’ll prioritize it over one of music’s all-time greatest artists. They’ll prioritize it over society. They’ll clearly prioritize it over the health of people, and whether they live and die as well.
Ultimately, censorship, or ousting Rogan from the platform may not even be the intelligent response. It would cause a backlash of 1st Amendment rhetoric. There is a solution though. Spotify is who pays Joe Rogan now, so they certainly have the power to dictate what is and isn’t on the Joe Rogan Podcast as far as content. If Spotify really cared about anything other than profit and their own greed, they would make an effort to platform just as many doctors and epidemiologists to combat and level-out the misinformation coming from the Joe Rogan Podcast.
Instead, now, once again, we have corporations dividing society on issues such as this. Given that Neil Young’s stance is the more popular, widely acknowledged one, Spotify may lose customers. It is clear Spotify is failing America.
