SIdney Poitier Passes Away at Age 94
They called him Mr. Tibbs. Born in Miami and raised in the Bahamas, Sidney Poitier rose to stardom and would become the most influential black actor of all-time. From classic films with essential societal undertones such as In the Heat of the Night (1967), to Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967), Poitier had a profound sense of acting to convey moral purpose.
Sydney Poitier was an icon of trailblazing equality, a symbol of hope, and the first black actor to win the Best Actor Academy Award. After winning Best Actor from the Academy in 1963, he would then go on to be named honorary Best Actor in 2002, the same year the next black actor was named Best Actor. Sidney Poitier passed the torch to Denzel Washington. 20 years later we celebrate the life of Sidney Poitier. Poitier passed away January 6, 2022 at the age of 94.
