First DMX, Now Biz Markie, Why Do Hip-Hop Blogs Keep Falsely Reporting Deaths?
Before the devastating passing of DMX, there was premature rumor that he died on social media. This was largely amplified by Hip-Hop blogs tweeting out their RIP messages early, and assuming that the figure had died. What is clear in this moment and last night, is that these blogs are really amateur when it comes to journalistic practices. Biz Markie is now facing unfortunate health circumstances but has not died as Revolt, Datpiff, and others would have you believe.
We even fell for it, tweeting out condolences early, but in large part due to publications that you’d figure to have the proper sourcing, to know and verify the truth. Clearly, there’s no interest in the truth if millions follow you and you put out news that a beloved figure has died without knowing in absolute certainty. If there’s no interest in the truth and no obligation to it, you’re simply chasing clout.
To do so under the circumstances additionally is reprehensible. To any blog or medium that tweeted or put anything out prematurely regarding someone’s alleged death, shame on you. The culture deserves better.
