Movements Work, Britney Spears is Freed

Britney Spears has officially been freed from a conservatorship involving her father, Jamie Spears. While a conservatorship will still continue, it will not at all be handled by her father any longer, the source of much misery for Britney Spears and the main qualm of those a part of the “Free Britney” movement. This is a great example of activism, organizing and a movement working.

Britney Spears is a widely-loved pop culture phenomenon and fans hated to see her confined by a conservatorship with what seemed to have priority to control, not to rehabilitate. Spears has been in this conservatorship since 2008. It took 13 years to change the trajectory of her situation, something that will shine a light on conservatorships and a rather strange judicial outcome. The “Free Britney” movement worked. It applied pressure to those who could change this. There is something to learn here when it comes to a variety of other issues, whatever it is you care about. Movements work. Go organize.
